The Star Wars actress, who passed away in 2016, finished filming the movie just six weeks prior to her death on December 27.

She died just days after she went into cardiac arrest while on a flight from London to Los Angeles.

The film, which also stars Rita Ora, is a coming-of-age fairy tale set between modern-day Italy and an imaginary realm just beyond.

The movie follows Violet, a 12-year-old girl as she undertakes a journey that transforms her world, with Carrie and Rita playing powerful witches named Hazel and Yana.

The film is set to finally be related on June 23, seven years after the filming wrapped up. Fisher’s death and the Coronavirus pandemic saw the project’s release delayed.

In 2020, the cast and crew of Wonderwell paired tribute to Carrie on what would have been her birthday.

“Happy birthday to the great Carrie Fisher! She was an extraordinary person and a hero like no other. The Wonderwell team was lucky to celebrate her last birthday with her, partying until sunrise after a long shoot,” they wrote on the film’s Instagram account.

“Carrie was truly an inspiration, from her work for the mental health community to her role in encouraging women to be fearless and unstoppable. She is the image of strength we hope our film brings young women everywhere. As Carrie once said: “Do not let what you think they think of you make you stop and question everything you are.”

During an interview with Legend Magazine in 2017, a year after Carrie’s death, Rita Ora spoke more on her experience filming the movie together.

“I was with her the day before she got on that flight and it’s just crazy. She drank a lot of Coca-Cola and we were, like, loving life on Coca-Cola,” the singer said in the interview.

“We were laughing, the scene was amazing and she helped me a lot. And that was it. I hope people enjoy the movie, Wonderwell. It’s a cool movie.”
