It’s perhaps one of the most controversial shows Australian TV. But despite past seasons being nothing short of explosive, Nine producers are insisting that the upcoming 2020 season of Married At First Sight is set to be a more subdued affair.

Speaking to TV Tonight, Channel Nine’s Programming Director, Hamish Turner was keen to suggest that season seven – which stars in less than a week – is going to be ‘a delicate balance’ between love and drama.

‘There will be drama, there is no doubt and we’re not afraid of that.’

‘But the beginning of the show is definitely people looking for love and that should absolutely be the driving force behind it,’ he added.

Turner went on to say that ‘sometimes love comes with drama’ and that this is simply a ‘reflection of everyday life’.

‘With the majority of the weddings it starts with hope and the aspirational journey. As difficult as people may be, I think the majority of people enter it to find love,’ he said.

Similarly, Nine’s head of content, production and development Adrian Swift told the Sydney Morning Herald: “On the one side of the equation we’ve got this amazing drama happening.

On the other side, it’s ‘hold on a second; for this to be a massive hit we’ve got to get mothers, teenage daughters and old people to watch – and they will find a lot of this shocking’. That was the gymnastics we went through pretty much every day last season.”

This year, he adds, “there is a certain amount of addressing last year. You can’t sanitise it too much [but] I think the mood of the nation has changed a little bit with the bushfires. I think people need a little more love because of all the travails we’ve been through over the last few months.”
