Dannii Minogue has revealed the shockingly sordid tactics a magazine once went to in order to try and force her into giving an interview.
Watch Dannii talk about her horrific HIV blackmail ordeal:
Speaking on Anh’s Brush With Fame on Wednesday, the singer and TV personality confessed that a journalist once threatened to run a false story alleging she was HIV positive unless she agreed to an interview.
‘This was in London. I come home to my building and there’s a bunch of flowers for me. I take it up to my apartment and there’s a letter with it,” the 47-year-old revealed.
‘I open up the letter and it says, “Hi, I’m such-and-such journalist and we are running a story tomorrow to say that you are HIV positive unless you contact us”.’
‘Like, what kind of blackmail is this that comes with a bunch of flowers?!’ said Dannii.
‘We called up and said, “This is a really heavy accusation and you’d be in a really bad place to print it, because it’s not true.”
Dannii admitted that as the event took place in a time before social media, she felt she had no place to voice her horror and deny the accusations.
‘Pre-social media, you have no voice to say what’s going on. I rang my GP and I said, “I’m coming over to you now. I need help”‘.
‘I said, “They’re going to run this article and the only thing I can do is if you can take some blood now and you get the results to them immediately before they run this tomorrow.”‘
Armed with the results, Dannii revealed she called up the magazine. “That’s what I told you on the phone – that I’m not HIV positive so don’t run the article because it won’t be good for you.”‘
