Meghan Markle may have only just begun her role as The Duchess of Sussex, but it appears the newest royal is already ruffling some feathers after her coat of arms design was revealed.

On Saturday 26 of May, Kensington Royal shared a snap of Meghan’s official symbol.

According to the Royal website, “The blue background of the shield represents the Pacific Ocean off the California coast, while the two golden rays across the shield are symbolic of the sunshine of The Duchess’s home state.”

Meanwhile, “The three quills represent communication and the power of words.” Quite powerful given how open Meghan has been about her feminist views in the past.

But the Duchess also paid homage to her place of birth as “Beneath the shield on the grass sits a collection of golden poppies, California’s state flower, and wintersweet, which grows at Kensington Palace.”

The website reports that “It is customary for Supporters of the shield to be assigned to Members of the Royal Family, and for wives of Members of the Royal Family to have one of their husband’s Supporters and one relating to themselves.”

“The Supporter relating to The Duchess of Sussex is a songbird with wings elevated as if flying and an open beak, which with the quill represents the power of communication,” the statement continued.

After the announcement was made though, royal fans were up in arms as they believed one detail was offensive, notice the bird has a crown draped around its neck.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are yet to make any comments after the backlash. What do you think? Are people reading into it? Let us know on Facebook.
