Over the weekend, images surfaced of Ellen DeGeneres and her wife Portia De Rossi’s new $100M (AUD) Carpinteria dream home in California’s Santa Barbara county.
We’re told the palatial estate is situated in an area “very popular among horse riders”.
Horse riding, as many may know, is Portia’s greatest passion.

The couple, who boast a prolific local property portfolio and are often referred to as ‘flippers,’ recently put down $102.4M (AUD) for not one, but two properties in the boujee seaside town.
According to Domain, their haul encompasses a $61M (AUD) Tuscan mansion and a $41.3M (AUD) block next door.
The staggering figure makes the purchase Santa Barbara county’s most expensive residential real estate deal ever.
So what’s inside, you ask? Well, take a seat and a few deep breaths: five beds, eight bathrooms, a marble pool with two spas and a massive wine cellar. Oh yeah, and there’s a guesthouse too.
The whole thing overlooks the idyllic Pacific Ocean.
“The beach in front of the property stunning, and the area is very popular among horse riders – on any given day you’ll see way more riders than walkers, it’s a real horsey heaven on a very ‘locals’ only’ kind of place,” our source says.
“Portia’s a mad keen horse rider and has even credited the hobby and the animals with saving her life.”
Ellen fans will know that the famed daytime host called time on The Ellen Show in May after nineteen years. The abrupt exit followed concerning reports that claimed Ellen ran a toxic workplace that was rife with bullying.
Our sources believe Ellen’s new property purchase was a make-good or thank you gift of sorts to Portia, who was a rock for Ellen during the scandal.
“The local gossip is that this whole move is for Portia, who remained such a loyal support to Ellen during all that ugly bullying stuff. Apparently this is Portia’s dream property, and Ellen wanted to buy it for her in return for being an amazingly supportive wife throughout her entire career. Portia loves it and wants it to be her forever home.”
“This is the perfect place for Ellen and Portia. Apparently they bought it because it’s such a horse-friendly area,” a source adds.
A separate source says, “There’s a lot of work going on at what was an already perfect property, and the word on the street is that Ellen’s having stables built for Portia’s horses.”
Another insider adds, “Ellen and Portia buying up on Padaro Lane has been the biggest event of the year around here, and that’s even among a neighbourhood that counts so many celebrities as residents [Note: Kourtney and Travis, Kevin Costner and Ashton and Mila all have places on Padaro Lane]”.
“Everyone’s hoping to see them down at the Padaro Grill, where there’s a big vegan menu for them to enjoy. Everyone knows they’ll be very happy here.”
