Viewers may have cringed when Dean Wells declared himself to be an “alpha male” looking for a woman to “respect me as a man”. But his new bride Tracey Jewel tells WHO the 39-year-old social media executive was just what she ordered!
“I’m quite old-fashioned, Jewel, 36, says. “I want the guy to take the lead and look after us – I don’t mean financially, I mean emotionally in the relationship. I don’t think relationships work if you are both trying to take the power role.
“A woman’s energy is more… I don’t like using the word submissive because that has the wrong connotations these days, but I think it’s a more vulnerable and compassionate energy than what a guy brings. If you are both trying to take the powerful role it doesn’t work.”
With her parents recently celebrating 50 years of marriage, Jewel says she has always modelled her relationships after them in the hope of finding similar success.
“My mum was very much the ‘mum’ and the woman and my dad is quite the alpha male and it’s worked really well for them,” the marketing consultant explains.
“I always go for the ‘man’s man’, 100 per cent that’s my type,” she says. “And that’s not just to do with success and ambition, that’s just because of the way they are. That’s probably why I’ve always gone for older men too because they have that confidence, they know how to treat a woman.”
A single mum to daughter Grace, eight, Jewel says she knows her views on traditional gender roles can be unpopular – especially in the current #timesup climate.
“But it’s just so silly,” she says. “I am a really girly girl but I also want to be respected. It’s just that you can’t be the same person in the relationship – if you’re both trying to wear the pants you end up arguing and combative.”
