It’s been 10 years since George Clooney was last seen on TV in the role that made him a star, ER‘s Dr Doug Ross, and even longer since he played that part regularly, having focussed on movies ever since. Later this year, the 57-year-old star makes his long-awaited return to the small screen. And he’s sporting a killer moustache.

Clooney will play Scheisskopf in the new TV adaptation of Catch-22 (watch the trailer above), based on the classic novel by Joseph Heller. The actor, who will also executive produce and direct the six-episode series, had originally planned to play the more promiment role of Col. Cathcart, but that role will now be portrayed by Friday Night Lights star Kyle Chandler.

The satirical series, which will also star Hugh Laurie, is set during World War II, focussing on the experince of young bombardier Captain John Yossarian (Girls‘ Christopher Abbott) as he navigates the maddening rules and policies of the US Air Force.

“It’s not that he’s scared of death, it’s that he’s scared of who decides to bestow death upon him,” says Abbott. “He’s fully aware that death is imminent, but he doesn’t want it at the hands of this bureaucratic system.”
