It had the most nominations of any streaming service at this week’s Golden Globe Awards, so it was understandable Netflix would walk away with a few of the night’s top awards. Two of its shows and one movie were among the winners, and if you haven’t watched them yet, you need to get onto that straight away.
The Kominsky Method
Won: Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy and Michael Douglas for Best Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy
Starring Golden Globe winner Douglas as Sandy Kominsky, an actor who never quite made it big and is now an in-demand acting teacher, and Alan Arkin as his agent, Norman Newlander, The Kominsky Method is a sweet look at aging and friendship with great performances from its two leads, both Hollywood veterans themselves. Although created by Chuck Lorre, the eight-part series is nothing like his laugh track-accompanied, gag-filled sitcoms Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory. More thoughtful and senstive than his other shows, Kominsky also has a great supporting cast and plenty of celebrity cameos that flesh out Sandy’s world. Watch the trailer above.
Bodyguard
Won: Richard Madden for Best Actor in a Television Series – Drama
Featuring the tensest opening sequence seen on the small screen in years, political thriller Bodyguard was one of the most buzzed about shows of 2018. Former Game of Thrones actor Madden stars as Sergeant David Budd, a war vet, a separated father of two and a bodyguard assigned to controversial home secretary Julia Montague (Keeley Hawes), whose stance on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan Budd violently disagrees with. When Montague is the target of an assassination attempt, Budd is in the thick of the intrigue, but is he complicit in the plot? Block out some time this weekend – this gripping six-part drama is one to binge hard. Watch the trailer above.
Roma
Won: Best Foreign Language Film and Alfonso Cuarón for Best Director
Released briefly in cinemas as well as on Netflix, this Spanish and Mixtec film is written and directed by Cuarón, known for his previous work on cult classics Y Tu Mamá También and Children of Men and crown pleasers Gravity and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The film, which is hotly tipped for Oscar attention, tells the story of young maid Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio), who works for a middle-class family in Roma, Mexico City. Set in 1970, the film draws heavily on Cuarón’s own upbringing to tell an intensely personal tale as well as depict the larger social and political picture of the era. Watch the trailer above.
