“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” said director Rob Marshall.
Halle has been making waves in the music industry for some time now.
Alongside starring with sister Chloe in the Freeform series Grown-ish, the talented singer – who rose to fame after Beyoncé saw the sisters’ cover her song Pretty Hurts – also recorded the theme song for Grown-ish in 2017, and has sung live at the Grammys.
Announcing the exciting news via the Chloe x Halle Twitter account, the young star wrote, “dream come true,” followed by a wave and mermaid emoji.
It is also believed that Melissa McCarthy is in talks to play the evil Ursula in the live-action remake, which will feature music from the original 1989 animation, including the classic songs by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman and new songs by Menken and Hamilton lyricist Lin Manuel-Miranda.
ET online also reports that Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina are in talks for the roles of Ariels sea-friends Flounder and Scuttle.
