This year’s House Rules prize money is worth over $350,000!

In a surprising change of pace, the contestants earnt their own prize money by flipping a house in Sydney.

This season of House Rules started out a little differently to the past five series, with the teams thrown into the deep end with the renovation of a house in the Sydney suburb of Rosebery. “What a start to the competition,” said host Johanna Griggs. “You had to renovate an entire house front, back inside and out, add a second story. You also had to design rooms that would return big bucks at auction.”

The house was purchased for $1.25 million pre-reno and the teams were given the task to give this “renovators delight” a makeover before it went to auction a week later. When the hammer fell, anything over the purchase price would be the prize money for this series, so the pressure was on!

After only a week, the seven House Rules teams turned this house inside out and upside down to produce a family-friendly home in the heart of Sydney which sold for a whopping $1.605 million, leaving the remaining $355,000 as the prize money – more than enough to pay off a mortgage for one lucky team!

The auction was jam-packed with prospective buyers.

“Coming into this competition, we were just happy that you get your house reno’ed but $355,000, that on top of it is just completely life-changing,” said Jared.

Kristie and Leigh are hoping that the money will be in their hands by the end of the competition. “Our mortgage is $350,000,” said Kristie. “Let’s hope that this is meant to be,” Leigh said.

While Mandy revealed that she was keen to use some of that money for her and Toad’s wedding, Toad had other ideas, saying that he wanted to “buy a few extra cows… and maybe a boat.”
