Australian Ironman legend Dean Mercer has passed away in a Gold Coast hospital after he crashed his car through a fence on the morning of August 28.
Paramedics rushed the sporting star to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition after he drove his SUV through the back fence of a home on Markeri Street at Mermaid Waters.
According to The Gold Coast Bulletin, the 47-year-old suffered a medical condition at the wheel, which may have caused the crash.
Sources said Mercer went into cardiac arrest in the emergency department and passed away moments after paramedics had reached the hospital.
Mercer leaves behind four children and his wife, Reen.
