With Comedian Sacha Baron Cohen as her husband, Isla Fisher, 42, would have to have a sense of humour.
But as her ING ads, and scene-stealing turns in films such as Wedding Crashers and Tag prove, she’s pretty funny herself.
As she tells WHO, “It is really important to stay in touch with your inner child,” which is something she does by taking on comic roles and being a mum to her three children, daughters Olive, 10, Elula, 7, and son Montgomery, 3.
WHO: Your new film, Tag, is about a group of childhood friends that have played the same game for decades. Is the secret to staying young to never stop playing, as the movie suggests?
That’s the attraction of acting, because actors play dress-up, put on silly voices and tell stories, which is something we do as kids. So it is important to find the things that bring you joy because then you live longer. It’s friendship, too—it elongates your life. They’ve done studies on people over 100 and they often have solid friendships because friendship is so important.
WHO: You have a tight-knit group of friends in LA, like Naomi Watts and producer Bruna Papandrea, don’t you?
I got lucky to work with Naomi in I Heart Huckabees early on in my career here and we became instant friends. And Bruna, also. My relationships with those women involve cooking, eating and rosé. We all have big families, and our get togethers have gotten more and more fun. But my best friend, Angie, from the time I was six or seven, lives in Melbourne and we stay in touch onWhatsApp.
WHO: When did you last play tag?
I’ve got a house full of small children, so it’s more hide-and-seek. Sometimes I just hide at my computer for a few minutes. I always get caught.
WHO: Sacha must make you laugh. What’s he like on a daily basis?
Yes, he’s so funny. I feel so lucky, too—I’ve worked with so many amazing comedians, but nothing was funnier than working with my husband on Grimsby. All of his lines just made me laugh.
WHO: Are you as protective of your husband as your character in Tag?
I’m definitely very protective over my family. We’ve been together 17 years and I’ve tried so hard not to talk about our relationship just because I feel like, particularly in today’s world where everything’s available on Instagram, it’s so lovely to have a private thing just for us.
WHO: Does exercise keep you feeling young?
I’m going to say something controversial: I’m not exercising at all and I’ve never felt better. I was going to boot camp and hot yoga, and I thought, “No, this is exhausting.” It’s hard to stay motivated looking at yourself in Lycra over the age of 40!
