Jacqui Lambie and Sam Dastyari just had a heated political discussion about the death penalty on tonight’s episode of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! Australia.
“We have petty criminals out there because of drugs and alcohol because they’ve got addictions,” ex-politician Jacqui said. “So instead of having prisons with rehab in them to fix those we’re having hardcore idiots.”
She then suggested the death penalty was a better alternative than the current jail system in Australia.
“Why should the taxpayer have to pay for him and his food for the next 60 years?”
But Sam was quick to refute her views.
“Putting someone to death, costs more than a lifetime in prison,” the former Labor senator said.
In any Western system that’s going to give people proper judicial review. When you draw a line, the American system has unequivocally shown this, you get it wrong some time.”
Speaking to producers afterwards, Sam said, “Jacqui and I get along like a house on fire, but we disagree on so much. And as much as I respect Jacqui as a person, when it comes to the death penalty, that’s a bridge too far.”
