This shouldn't even come as a surprise.

Kim Kardashian West is no stranger to controversy, especially when it comes to cultural appropriation. How she turned her a shapewear line into that kind of drama is something only she could achieve.

Consider us equal parts impressed and disappointed.

The KKW Beauty founder recently announced her dive into shapewear, which was exciting news! However, the name wasn’t: Kimono Shapewear.

Kimono’s are traditionally from the Japanese culture, typically a robe-like garment, which has absolutely nothing to do with shapewear, if you were wondering.

What’s worse is that Kardashian-West actually tried to trademark the word so she can use it for her new line, reports the Los Angeles Times.

(Kimono, Kimono Body, Kimono Intimates, and Kimono World are some of the trademarks that are awaiting review).

As expected, people weren’t impressed, taking to social media to call out the reality star who is being accused of cultural appropriation.

“My culture is not your plaything,” wrote one fan. “My culture is not your brand name generator,” stated another.

Other people are sharing photos of themselves in an actual kimono.

Kim hasn’t yet responded to any of the criticism, but we’re almost certain that she was anticipating this kind of backlash.

TMZ last year reported that Kim filed documents with the trademark “Kimono Intimates,” at the time receiving a lot of negative responses.

Who knows, maybe this kind of media attention is exactly what a new product needs…
