When someone you’re totally into calls you mate repeatedly, it’s not generally the best sign that romance is about to bloom.

We’ve been there.
So it doesn’t bode super well for Married At First Sight couple Aleksandra Markovic and Ivan Sarakula that the stunning bride called her new beau “mate” around, oh, six or so times during their wedding day… including as the pair headed to bed together after the reception!
There’s no denying the pair got along like a house on fire – but while their banter was 100 per cent there, it did seem to lack a certain romantic spark you’d be looking for when you join a reality TV dating show.
Take, for example, the bubbly bride telling Ivan he “looks 14 years old!” when he told her he was 30.
(Ouch.)
And her making reference to his “little skinny body” during their photoshoot.
(Ooft.)
Aleks also tells the producers more than once that Ivan is most definitely not the type of guy she usually goes for.
“He’s so opposite to what I generally go for, it’s crazy,” says the 26-year-old, singling out his light-coloured hair and clean-shaven face.
“I don’t tend to go for someone skinny.”
But the most telling signs that Ivan’s unwittingly strolled straight into the friend zone comes at the end of the night, when the pair are prepping for bed.
“I’m going to put my PJs on, matey,” Aleks tells him after he’s given her a hand undoing a couple of the buttons on her wedding gown.
“Alright. No worries,” he replied, picking up on that key word.
“Matey, hey?”
“Matey,” Aleks confirmed as she walked to the other room to change, covertly shutting down any hopes Ivan might’ve had for romance.
“He’s definitely not my usual type, but we are, you know, already getting up to that best friends level,” Aleks told producers tellingly before they climbed into bed – and she made it clear to Ivan there’d be no funny business.
“You’re on that side, mate, remember?” she told him when he got a little too cosy.
“There’s the Great Wall of China!” indicating an invisible line in the middle of the bed.
Now, we’re not saying the potential for love isn’t there.
Hey, we want these two to find love as much as they want to find love!
But given Aleks has already labelled her fellow real estate agent her “best friend” and they’re only one ep in as a couple, we’re not holding our breath for sparks…
