Just when we thought Married At First Sight couple David Cannon and Hayley Vernon were onto a good thing, the couple’s honeymoon has stopped love in its tracks!

Okay, we admit – we didn’t actually think they were onto a good thing. It’s been clear since before the show even started that this would be one of the most explosive pairings we’ve sen on the show to date.
(Need we remind you about the toothbrush-in-the-toilet fiasco?)
Anyway, after a wedding that went off without a hitch (unless you count Mum and Dad hating your spouse as a ‘hitch’), the duo jetted off to Singapore.
And that’s where they ran into trouble.
Interestingly, it wasn’t Hayley’s reveal of her past struggles with drug addiction that threw her new beau – which she feared might happen.
“I’m not dating someone from five years ago,” he said.
“I’m glad she told me. I don’t want secrets with my wife. It doesn’t faze me. Her past doesn’t affect her future.”
“If I think back to myself five years ago, I’m nowhere near the same person. So I don’t judge Hayley on her drug use.”
But trouble started when David felt judged by comments Hayley apparently made about how much money he’s making as a truck driver.
First, there was a bit of a he-said she-said between the pair over what actually went down.
David reckoned Hayley said to him:
“Your $25 an hour wage is not going to cut it for me.”
Which, for obvious reasons, could be fairly hurtful.
“It’s the lowest I’ve ever earned but I’m by far the happiest,” he told her, feeling the need to justify his vocation.
“It’s not that earning $25 an hour is a worry for me or a concern for me,” Hayley shot back.
“I just never want to have to live paycheque to paycheque, because I’ve been in a situation where I haven’t had money. I’ve been in a situation where I’ve had to go foodless, so I never want to be in that situation again.”
And with that, she shut the conversation down, without acknowledging David’s feelings or apologising that her comment made him feel sh-tty.
In fact, the finance broker admitted she was peeved that he even brought it up.
After a bit of time apart, the pair tried to put the whole drama behind them and enjoy a nice dinner together – but, honestly, who were they kidding, because we could all still see the tension and growing resentment.
Enter the Honeymoon Box – a collection of questions to ask each other to “slow things down”, according to the experts.
Loosely translated, that is MAFS speak for “stir up more drama”.
And it went a little something like this…
Hayley: “What’s something you’ve never been told before?”
David: “Well… you asked for it… I’ve never had anybody before comment on my hourly wage.”
(Quick, grab the popcorn!)
“This is obviously a really sore point for me,” explained David, who was clearly upset that his hurt feelings weren’t being acknowledged and also angry that, in Hayley’s denial of having that what he recalled, she was effectively calling him a liar.
(If only this was a reality show and their conversations had been recorded on camera and we could go back and see what had actually been said and what hadn’t…)
Before the whole thing could spiral any further, Hayley shut it down again, saying,
“Anyway next question, I don’t want to discuss it anymore.”
But we bet she wished she hadn’t, because the next one was a doozy.
“Do you see yourself falling in love with me?” she asked.
“Right at this present moment? I’m struggling,” he replied.
Oooooouch.
Oh, and then they had a fight about her smoking. (David told the experts it was a deal breaker, but set him up with Hayley – a social smoker – regardless.)
“I’m not a full-time smoker, that’s not me, but whatever will be will be,” she retorted angrily, after David pointed out that she’d apparently agreed not to smoke anymore.
“I couldn’t give a f–k. It’s absolute utter nonsense.”
And with that, she stomped away. Yikes!
“Hayley didn’t like that I’ve brought up some real and raw issues,” David later told producers, who organised him a separate hotel room.
“But instead of addressing the issue as adults, she stormed out. I’ve never met someone so inconsiderate in my whole entire life.
“I’m actually at the point where if I was handed a ticket to the airport, I would run to the airport until my feet bled. I would sprint.”
