The couple were surrounded by 65 family and friends as they said their ‘I do’s’ at the Chateau de Halloy, a castle in Ciney, Belgium on Saturday.

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph about the magical ceremony, Matthew said: “The whole thing was so beautiful, I was crying for basically the entire ceremony.”

Rutherford’s niece was flower girl while his mother performed the ceremony.

However, sadly, not all of Mitcham’s family were able to make it to the ceremony in Europe, with his grandparents unable to fly over and his uncle is currently in quarantine as one of the passengers on the coronavirus hit cruise ship, the Diamond Princess.

The couple also wrote their own wedding vows.

“After a sustained period of lovely gestures, loyalty, gazing adoringly and many trips to Ikea, I managed to trick Luke into falling in love with me, proposing to me and finally marrying me,” Mitcham wrote on Instagram. “Now he’s stuck with me forever and ever, ha!”

Mitcham – who won gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics – was the first openly gay athlete to win an Olympic gold medal when he came out before winning the 10 metre platform event

He also recorded the highest ever Olympic score for a diver, 112.10.

The former athlete made headlines when official broadcaster NBC didn’t show the Australian athlete hugging and kissing his former partner Lachlan Fletcher during his victory lap of the pool.

Mitcham now focuses on performing his cabaret show around the country and is a strong advocate for marriage equality.
