It’s clear 2023 will be remembered as the year of Barbie. As Greta Gerwig’s film made its July premiere, Barbie pretty much took over the world.
Sure there was the movie itself and the very impressive media tour that showcased Barbie high-fashion, but even on a local level, Barbie was everywhere. From your hair tools to your shoe choice, and even winter oodies, Pink was in and we couldn’t escape.
Now, as we wait for news on any sequels, we’re glad to hear another pint-sized classic toy is getting its very own doll-to-screen adaption: Polly Pocket.
Yeah, you heard that right. Everyone’s favourite fashionable rubber doll is getting a live-action remake.
It’s actually not a super new piece of information. The film has been in the works since 2021 and already has some big names tied to the project. And it’s safe to say Mattel are kind of on a roll – 45 films are reportedly planned, so Barbie and Polly Pocket are only the beginning!
Who will star in the Polly Pocket Movie?
Although the Polly Pocket movie has been in the works since 2021, details on the cast have remained pretty sparse.
We do know Girls‘ star Lena Dunham is set to write and direct the film and the only actress that has been attached to the project is Emily in Paris lead, Lily Collins.
“As a child who was obsessed with Polly Pocket, this is a real dream come true and I can’t wait to bring these tiny toys to the big screen,” Lily told Variety in 2021.
What will the Polly Pocket Movie be about?
Again, details are sparse, however, when the project was first announced, Variety reported that the film “will centre on a young girl and a pocket-sized woman who form a friendship.”
Lena also added that she was hoping to create a “smart playful” film that would speak to young women “without condescension.”
“Polly Pocket was responsible for countless hours of childhood escapism for me–Polly gave me a tiny world of magic and autonomy to narrate, so it’s pretty poetic to be tackling these same ideas now as a director collaborating with the brilliant Lily Collins, Robbie Brenner, Mattel and MGM,” she told the publication.
“I’m so thrilled to bring to bear both my love of this historic property and also my deep-seated belief that young women need smart playful films that speak to them without condescension.”
In October 2022 Lena shared that she was in the process of finishing the second draft of the script, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “we have a lot of fun with the idea of what happens when a small person encounters a big world.”
She also added that Lily Collin’s Polly Pocket will be *very* small in the film, explaining that she was taking inspiration from “the original teensy tiny ’90s size…they made her a little bigger now, which I support, because of choking hazards. But I’m writing ’90s tiny.”
When will the Polly Pocket Movie be released?
Whilst we know there is a script, a director/writer and a lead star attached to the film…we have no idea when filming will begin, especially as we navigate the film industry amidst writers and actors strikes. But we will keep you updated!
