A local mayor described the state of his town as looking “like a war zone.”

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has warned residents to brace for “shock and awe” as the extent of the damage is yet to be known.

She has also called out the “appalling” behaviour of residents who continued to drive and surf as the cyclone hit.

“I cannot believe this sort of behaviour,” she told ABC news. “To go out there in the treacherous surf is simply irresponsible.”

The Premier also weighed in on the “risky” actions of some locals.

“Honestly, why do you want to put your own life at risk and put the lives of others at risk?” she said.

Among those harmed in the cyclone are two men who were on board a vessel near Whitsunday Island when the storm hit.

SkyNews have confirmed that the men are still on board their vessel.

“We’ve got them as safe as possible at the moment … we’ll do everything we can do to get our boats out to them but it will be a while before we can get out to them,” a spokesperson confirmed.

As of this morning, the cyclone has weakened back to a low pressure system.

Debbie is expected to move south and south east as heavy rain, flooding, high tides and 120KPH winds continue to threaten parts of Queensland for the next few days.
