AI has proven to be exhausting. Gone are the days of mindlessly scrolling through feeds and sharing funny pictures and videos with friends. Now, we have to think before we hit share (how rude!).
Is that video of a puppy doing yoga actually real? Is that Selena-Gomez-coded song actually being sung by Justin Bieber??
We understood social media was changing, but who knew that having to fact-check and think about every piece of content before sharing and risking humiliation could be so tiring?
Look, we know we’re being dramatic here, but the internet really has changed. And although internet scams of the past caught out the gullible and naive, rapidly evolving AI has us all giving side-eye to content, which in hindsight is probably a good thing.
But the latest artificial intelligence trend is reminding us that the internet can still be fun. But what is the AI Barbie Doll trend, and how can you create your own personalised Barbie box?
Here’s everything you need to know and why you might want to hold off on creating your own barbiecore aesthetic.
What is the AI Barbie Box trend?
We’re sure you’ve seen the viral trend by now. What first started as a fun content idea used by a handful of influencers has quickly been picked up by almost every major brand as a fun marketing tool.
Rob Irwin in his Bonds gear? There’s an AI Figurine for that. Your favourite TikTokker probably has one, too.
Basically, ChatGPT is helping people create their own action figure boxed dolls. A doll version of yourself is included, as well as a few items on the side. Think yoga mats, lip gloss or matcha lattes.
It’s fun, and it’s free… and it’s probably already flooding your FYP. But, just like the Ghibli-style AI art trend of the week prior, it’s a relatively harmless trend that is almost hitting the overdone point by now.
That being said, while it’s all fun and games turning yourself into a lip-gloss-wielding figurine, it’s worth remembering that real artists exist too and AI-generated art can impact their livelihoods by undercutting creative work. Not to mention, generating all these images (and the endless prompts behind them) uses up a surprising amount of energy, contributing to the growing environmental footprint of AI.
How to do the ChatGPT Barbie doll trend
So, how do you actually create your own AI Barbie doll box? It’s scarily simple and, honestly, kind of addictive. All you need is a ChatGPT Plus account and a photo of yourself (selfie queens, this is your moment).
Here’s how to do it:
- Log into your ChatGPT account.
- Upload a photo of yourself. If it’s just a headshot, you’ll need to add more details to help the AI picture your full Barbie form.
- Give it a prompt. Alongside your image, type something like:
“Draw an action figure of the person in this photo. The figure should be full-body and displayed in its original blister pack. She always has (insert your signature items here—maybe a matcha, claw clip, or tiny Pilates mat).” - Tweak and personalise. Want your Barbie to wear a tiara and carry a tiny microphone? Say so! The more specific you get, the more iconic your mini-me becomes.
And voilà—your AI Barbie (or action hero, or chaotic goblin girlie) is born.
