The Sydney man who was convicted of the murder of his fiancée has lost his appeal.
Simon Gittany, 42, is serving a minimum 18-year prison term for the 2011 murder of Lisa Harnum, 30.
In a 2013 trial that gripped Australia, the court found Gittany “unloaded” Harnum from the balcony of his 15th-storey apartment in Sydney’s CBD. Before Harnum’s death, security camera footage showed Gittany violently forcing his fiancée back into his apartment.
It was the final act of a relationship in which Gittany became, said Senior Crown Prosecutor Mark Tedeschi, “controlling, abusive and dominating.”
Harnum “wasn’t allowed to look at other men,” her life coach Michelle Richmond told WHO at the time. “She had to walk down the street with her head down. She had to be home at a certain time.”
In the appeal, Gittany’s barrister, Stephen Odgers, SC, had raised questions over the testimony of a witness who saw Gittany unload an “object” from the balcony, but the three judges of the NSW Criminal Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal.
