SpongeBob SquarePants creator Stephen Hillenburg has died

The creative genius behind the hugely popular kids animation SpongeBob SquarePants, Stephen Hillenburg, has died of ALS.

He was 57.

Home of the series, Nickelodeon.

“He was a beloved friend and long-time creative partner to everyone at Nickelodeon, and our hearts go out to his entire family,” the network stated.

Hillenburg is survived by his wife, Karen, his son, Clay, his mother, Nancy and a brother, Brian.
