Despite only being released three days ago, Midnights is receiving critical acclaim and has already broken multiple records; including the Spotify record for the most streamed album in a single day and the Apple Music record for the most-streamed pop album in a single day.

In typical Swift fashion, the album is brimming with cryptic references and easter eggs but it’s also straight up addressing long-standing rumours.

For example, for literal years everyone’s speculated when, and if, Taylor will get engaged to her boyfriend, actor Joe Alwyn.

And on Midnights’ opening track, Lavender Haze, Taylor directly acknowledges how she feels about being constantly questioned about marriage.

In the song’s second verse, Taylor sings, “All they keep asking me is if I’m gonna be your bride.”

She then calls out the media and society for reducing women to nothing more than their relationship status.

“The only kinda girl they see is a one night [stand] or a wife.”

Taylor then sings that she, rightfully so, finds this “dizzying”. The chorus of Lavender Haze also suggests that Taylor thinks the idea of marriage is out-dated as the lyrics include, “No deal, the 1950s sh*t they want from me.”

Taylor began dating Joe in 2016 and her documentary, Miss Americana features one of the few rare occasions where Taylor has openly spoken about the relationship.

“I was also falling in love with someone who had a really wonderfully normal, balanced, grounded life.”

“And we decided together that we wanted our relationship to be private,” the 11-time Grammy award winner said.

Midnights features another song called, Sweet Nothing which was co-written by Taylor and Joe (under the pseudonym William Bowery; Taylor confirmed Joe was William Bowery in the documentary, Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions).

This is the sixth song the couple have written together as they have previously collaborated for the songs Exile, Betty, Champagne Problems, Coney Island and Evermore, featured on Taylor’s previous sister albums, Folklore and Evermore. Talk about couple goals.
