WHO caught up with The Bachelorette‘s James Trethewie and he revealed all the things we didn’t see on TV, which contestants he keeps in contact with and how “lovely” he still thinks Sophie is.
WHO: Did you watch last night’s episode?
James: Yeah, I did yeah. I was with Luke in Manly watching it. Yeah.
WHO: Last night was a bit emotional, was there anything we didn’t get to see?
James: Yeah, there wasn’t like a sort of a big chat or anything. It was more just like ‘right girl out there for you’. And then just my bit, which was, like yeah no thank you, and I’m just grateful. And we did see a bit of that, which was nice.
WHO: You have received a lot of support on social media.
James: It’s been amazing. It’s been so overwhelming, you know, it’s just so nice that people will get behind the underdog. And they actually -people want a nice normal down to earth person, you know.
WHO: We are surprised that we are speaking to you at this stage. Were you surprised that you didn’t make it to the home visit?
James: Yeah absolutely. I think going into it, a lot of the conversation and the chats in the house with the guys, a lot of people had picked me to go all the way. So that had given me a bit of confidence, I just thought oh no okay. And then basing it off how I felt, and you know the experiences that we shared, yeah I didn’t really have any kind of signs or. I thought that we had great momentum and it was really good so going into that was a real shock for me. It was just that group date where there was just that bit about maybe being a bit too organized and then she’s not.
WHO: Who do you think is going to win?
James: I think that she’s got some really good connections with the other guys too and I think there are qualities in all of them that she can see. But I know she sort of adores Apollo so yeah I wouldn’t sort of write him off either.
WHO: Do you think it would have been different if you had met her at bar or something like that?
James: Well, probably not. I’m sort of like shy, I think I said to her from the start ‘I wouldn’t come up to you in a bar’. And she said, ‘no that’s why you’re here though because I don’t want that, I want the shy guy who wouldn’t approach me.’ So, no, I don’t think I would have met her in a bar. (Laughs)
WHO: We saw a lot of your interactions, which was why everyone was so surprised with your departure. While they weren’t overly romantic there was nothing in them that was bad. Is there anything you wish they showed throughout the series?
James: Look, not really. I mean I think they captured a lot of the heart and soul sense of it. But there’s certainly a lot more that could be shown like the conversations at rose ceremonies and things that were said and that kind of thing as well because there’s a lot more as well than has been there. And even at the ceremonies as well, we did a lot of fun things so I think when the intruders arrived, Apollo and I wanted to kind of break the ice because it was quite a tense environment for them. So we hosted a game show and got everyone involved, and it was fun. And even the night I left, I did a mentalist trick and read her mind with Apollo and that was kind of fun so there was a lot of laughter and good stuff. There’s just been so much content that it hasn’t made it.
WHO: Who are you still mates with after the show?
James: I’m still mates with all the guys. I see Luke a lot, we get along really well and he lives in Manly like close by to me which is awesome. And yeah, chat to Apollo nearly everyday as well and Bingham and all those guys. We are all good mates and chat so it’s all good.
WHO: Are you currently dating anyone?
James: No, I’m not. I was wanting to lay low just with the show on and everything I just wanted to let this pass and I didn’t want to give away the ending for anyone.
WHO: Will you be getting on Tinder?
James: (Laughs) No. I’m awful with that, I think I tried it a while back and I was too nice like I wanted to have a conversation and get to know people. I’m like an epic fail at that kind of thing. I think for me as well it’s probably nice to also just meet somebody. So I hope that being on here will lead to that.
WHO: Did you enjoy being on TV?
James: Yeah, yeah. Yeah, look it was fine. I didn’t even notice the cameras were there, I was just being real and being myself and I’m kind of, it was quite comfortable it was fine.
Would you go back on TV for the Bachelor in Paradise?
James: I wouldn’t do that, no. Yeah, I wouldn’t do that. But in terms of next or anything yeah I don’t know I think it would just depend on what it was, if it would work with what I’m doing and if I was seeing somebody or not and what kind of show it was. But I wouldn’t rule anything out, I just think all of that would line up.
WHO: Sophie wrote a note up on her Instagram and revealed she “did you a favour”, what do you think about that?
James:You know, it’s lovely to see her do that. We haven’t spoken since so for her to share a post like that it’s really good. And I think it just sort of helps explain everything in context and yeah, it’s just really lovely of her to say.
WHO: Do you think you would catch up with the winner?
James: Definitely, yeah. I’ve already seen a few of the boys and Apollo’s invited me up there in three weeks to hang out with him and the family and he’s got like a full magic show weekend thing at a big supernova festival kind of thing so yeah I’m going to be hanging with him up there and hopefully catch up with everybody.
