Bad news for the new TODAY team, with the new-look show taking a beating in the first ratings report by rival show Sunrise.
TODAY pulled in a metro audience of 197,000, while Sunrise achieved 266,000 – an outcome reported to be the Nine show’s ‘worst result in ten years’.
The figure is a particular disappointment when the new-look show should have been pulling in new viewers out of curiosity.
Georgie Gardner, Deb Knight and Brooke Boney were on Monday joined by Tom Steinfort and Tony Jones for the new look, after weeks of headlines and hype.
Gardner — the only star from the 2018 cast to remain — said it was “the very first day of a new era on Nine, with a new-look Today show team”.
“I’m thrilled to say good morning and welcome to my on-screen partner Deb Knight,” Gardner said.
Knight replied to her, “Partner-in-crime Georgie Gardner,” saying “it is fantastic to be here”.
She confessed it felt like “the first day of school!”

“Thankfully I’m not the only one on the desk who feels like the first day of school. I have new members of the team — and welcome to Tom Steinfort and Brooke Boney and Tony Jones,” she said.
Perhaps giving a warning as to what was coming in the ratings, fans on social media didn’t seem to be completely on board.
“Lost me, just switched off, trying Channel 10. Not happy,” one person said.
Another remarked, “So boring, there’s no fun there.. again too many woman (sic) men are more fun, crap show.”
But there were those who were excited for the change.
