Veronica Mars fans – rejoice! A new series of the naughties teen detective show, axed after just three seasons in 2007, has been announced – by none other than the star herself, Kristen Bell.
Bell made the announcement via Instagram on September 21, telling fans that all original episodes would be available to watch on the US screening service, Hulu, from Spring 2019, “Which is great, ‘cause you’ll need to brush up – since we’re making another one!”
Series creator Rob Thomas – no, not that guy who fronts Matchbox 20 – shed more light via his official Twitter page.
“I will say this: the movie was nostalgic. The Hulu limited series isn’t going to be. Hardcore So-Cal noir. One big case. Eight episodes to tell the story. This is a detective show,” he tweeted.

Since the announcement, more details have come to light. Thomas has confirmed that the reboot, which commences production later this year, will take place five years on from the events of the 2014 crowd-funded film.
Original cast members Jason Dohring (Logan), Percy Daggs III (Wallace), Francis Capra (Weevil) and David Starzyk (Richard Casablancas) will be joining Bell, with more announcements still to come.
Thomas has also amassed a high calibre writing team, including, somewhat surprisingly, NBA Hall of Fame basketball star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who has, in the past, penned his own graphic novels.
Last week, Hulu shed more light on what the series will be about, instantly sparking rumours it would be based, at least in part, on the first of two Veronica Mars novels, ‘The Thousand-Dollar Tan Line’ written by Thomas after the series wrapped.
The synopsis reads:
“Spring breakers are getting murdered in Neptune, thereby decimating the seaside town’s lifeblood tourist industry. After Mars Investigations is hired by the parents of one of the victims to find their son’s killer, Veronica is drawn into an epic eight-episode mystery that pits the enclave’s wealthy elites, who would rather put an end to the month-long bacchanalia, against a working class that relies on the cash influx that comes with being the West Coast’s answer to Daytona Beach.”
Thomas has publicly rejected this assumption, tweeting, “Like THE THOUSAND DOLLAR TAN LINE, the mini-series will be set against a Spring Break backdrop, but TDTL is NOT the story we’re telling. We’re five years after the movie. Books are 98% canon. Pony is included. Marcia Langdon is police chief. Spoiler: Neptune finally incorporated.”
