Walt Disney World announced a $1 million donation on Tuesday to those affected by the Sunday’s mass shooting in an Orlando nightclub that left 49 dead and 53 injured.
“We are heartbroken by this tragedy and hope our commitment will help those in the community affected by this senseless act,” said Bob Chapek, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. “With 74,000 Cast Members who call Orlando home, we mourn the loss of the victims and offer our condolences to their families, friends and loved ones.”
The $1 million donation from the city’s most high-profile company is being made to the www.oneorlando.org, which was established by Mayor Buddy Dyer to assist those affected by the tragedy through non-profit organisations in the community.
Walt Disney World is also providing complimentary accommodations for the families and friends of the victims.
In a press conference at Orlando Regional Health Care Center on Tuesday, trauma surgeon Dr. Michael Cheatham warned that the death toll may still rise, with six patients still in critical condition.
“This was the largest disaster that we probably could have imagined,” Cheatham said. “We went ahead and we implemented the plan that we had designed over the years and perfected through practice, and I think it worked.”
