Today, August 24 2018, Australia’s new Prime Minister could become Julia Bishop or Peter Dutton. Here is what you need to know about them:
Peter Dutton
Early life
At only 18 years of age, Peter joined the Young Liberals and ran unsuccessfully in his first state election in 1989. At 20, he graduated from the Queensland Police Academy in 1990 and worked as a police officer for nine years in the Drug Squad in Brisbane before moving into the Sex Offenders Squad.
In 1999, Peter left the police force to become a business man. He completed a Bachelor of Business at the Queensland University of Technology and alongside his father, he founded the business, Dutton’s Holdings in 2000.
Political career
Peter was elected to the Division of Dickson in the 2001 election after defeating Labor’s, Cheryl Kernot. He was later promoted to Minister for Workforce Participation before becoming Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Revenue.
Peter held his seat of Dickson in the 2007 elections despite the Liberal governments loss. And, following the election Peter was promoted to Shadow Minister for Finance, Competition Policy and Deregulation by the new Liberal leader Brendan Nelson.
In 2013 he was appointed Minister for Health and Minister for Sport by the then Prime Minister, Tony Abbot.
Due to a cabinet shuffle in 2014, Peter became the Minister for Immigration and Border Protection. At the end of 2017 he was appointed the Minister for Home Affairs.
Family life
Peter is married to Kirilly Dutton, 43, and they share two sons, Harry, 14 and Tom, 12.
Peter and his wife were married in 2003 and they live on a property in Dickson, Brisbane. The couple own several properties together, including a Townsville shopping center.
Kirilly is Peter’s second wife, he was previously married at 22 but divorced after a few months.
Peter also has a daughter Rebecca born in 2002 and he has a shared parenting arrangement with her mother.
Julie Bishop
Political career
Julie is no stranger to politics having held her own in parliament for the past two decades.
She’s highly equipped to take on the role as prime minister having held the role as Acting Prime Minister when Malcolm Turnbull went to Israel.
She’s also held the position as 21C to the Liberal Party for over 10 years.
Personal life
Julie was married to wealthy property magnate Neil Gillon for five years but after the couple split in 1988, she went onto have several relationships but never remarried.
In 2014 she met property developer and winemaker David Panton who she’s been with for the past four years.
She loves designer clothes
She’s a big fan of Armani and the Sydney store apparently has her credit card and size details on file, so she can have the latest outfit sent to her in a matter of hours. ‘I try and live within my means,’ Julie told Newscorp, while admitting she would like a wardrobe similar to Carrie’s from Sex and the City.
‘I’m careful with what I spend but I also try to buy clothes that will promote an appropriate image for Australia. Not that I want the clothes to wear me, I wear the clothes, nevertheless it’s overall presentation,’ she added.
