The carer, whose name cannot be revealed for legal and confidentiality reasons, is seen talking to investigators about her desperate search for the 3-year-old, who went missing back in 2014 while playing in the front garden of a home on the NSW mid-north coast.

‘I’ve got my head out the window [of the car] just looking for William,’ recalls the woman of jumping in her vehicle in a frantic bid to find him. ‘And I drive really slow on more, and I get to the riding school and I just think, “He’s not here”.

‘And then I bring the car back up, and I just run out and I look for him again.’

Filmed six days after William went missing, the video offers a glimpse into investigations that have still yet to reach a resolution – although police believe the child was likely snatched by parties unknown.  The inquest has already heard that two strange cars were seen parked in the street on the morning of the disappearance – apparently an infrequent situation in the very quiet street.

The foster mum yesterday revealed she heard a piercing scream as she checked vegetation near the family home, wondering if the sound was her imagination, or perhaps a bird.

‘It was like a scream. It was like when a child hurts themselves unexpectedly there’s a scream,’ she told the inquest. ‘And it felt like a scream. It was quick and it was high pitched and it was sharp.’

She went to a reedy area where she felt the sound may have come from, but saw nothing.

‘I got into the bush and I thought; I can’t see any red.

‘I thought maybe I imagined it. Maybe it’s as a bird.’

The inquest continues.
