Now of course Thomas won’t be making it to Windsor at all, after having surgery just days ago.
And it was heartbreaking for many to hear that Meghan will no longer have her father there to walk her down the aisle - after all, what girl doesn’t want her dad to give her away?
So then the talk was that her mother Doria Ragland would step in to do the job - the yoga instructor from LA flying in days ago to stand by her daughter and meet her new extended family.
That made perfect sense to me.
But as it turns out, that won’t be happening either. It was confirmed just yesterday that Prince Charles was asked by Meghan to take on the role.
And that just seems sad.
Yes, it’s sweet to think Charles, who has no daughters of his own, will get to step in, and the job will be a piece of (wedding) cake for the man who spends his life walking a very public road, but after such confusion and controversy surely the only member of Meghan’s family actually turning up should have been a part of the ceremony?
I assumed - as many would - that Doria was too nervous to do it. After all, the eyes of the entire world will be watching and the pressure - being that solo representative of Megan’s family and having to perform (and not trip, giggle or cry) - would have been just too much for the 61 year old.
But no. By all accounts it seems it was Meghan and Harry’s decision not to ask Doria to do it, allegedly wanting her instead to be able to relax and enjoy her daughter’s big day.
Look, that makes some sense - the woman doesn’t have royal training, has never even been to an event on this scale, doesn’t know protocol, should be allowed to sit back and watch the wedding ceremony - but I still find it incredibly sad to think that as Meghan gets absorbed into the mammoth machine that is the British royal family, her own relatives will now have very little part to play.
Doria, you had my vote - and even if you tripped, or giggled, or shed a tear, I’d have been cheering you on. Here’s hoping you get to enjoy your daughter’s wedding and not feel like you’re as sidelined as it seems.
