Prince Harry's trip to Angola would make Diana proud

Like mother, like son
  • 27 Sep 2019

Currently in Angola as part of his royal tour, Prince Harry followed in the footsteps of his mother, the late Princess Diana, on September 27, visiting the now-safe minefield the People's Princess was famously photographed walking through in 1997.

Dressed in protective gear, the Duke of Sussex – who, a day earlier, was involved in a tree-planting ceremony and assisted children with a reforestation project – retraced his mother's famous steps through a now-safe former minefield, honouring Diana's legacy.

"The Duke is humbled to be visiting a place and a community that was so special to his mother, and to recognise her tireless mission as an advocate for all those she felt needed her voice the most, even if the issue was not universally popular," read a statement shared on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's official Instagram page.

Following in the footsteps of his mother, Princess Diana, this morning The Duke of Sussex visited a de-mining site in Dirico, Angola, to raise awareness of the danger and prevalence of landmines that still exists today. The Duke joined @thehalotrust in their work to help clear the area to enable safe access for the local community. * "If an international ban on mines can be secured it means, looking far ahead, that the world may be a safer place for this generation's grandchildren." - Princess Diana, 1997 Today in Angola The Duke of Sussex will retrace his mother's steps to see the legacy of her work and how her connection with this community helped make the elimination of landmines a reality. In 1997 Diana Princess of Wales visited Huambo to bring global attention to the crisis of landmines and the people whose lives were being destroyed. Two decades later, the area has transformed from desolate and unhabitable to lively and vibrant, with colleges, schools and small businesses. The Duke is humbled to be visiting a place and a community that was so special to his mother, and to recognise her tireless mission as an advocate for all those she felt needed her voice the most, even if the issue was not universally popular. Princess Diana's visit helped change the course of history, and directly led to the Convention against Anti-Personal Landmines, also known as the Ottawa Treaty. Today, with the support of @thehalotrust, Angola now has a stated aim under the Treaty to be clear of known mines by 2025. Despite great progress, 60 million people worldwide still live in fear of landmines every day. During his visit today, The Duke will walk along the street which was once the minefield where his mother was famously pictured. #RoyalVisitAfrica #RoyalVisitAngola Photo©️PA

Not only there to pay tribute to his mother and highlight the remarkable work she undertook with The HALO Project to rid the world of landmines, Harry used the opportunity to further his mum's mission.

"Despite great progress, 60 million people worldwide still live in fear of landmines every day," was the message shared on the young royal's Instagram feed.

There is absolutely no question that Diana's work made a difference, HALO Angola's Operations Manager Valdemar Goncalves Fernandes told CNN.

"The results we have now is because of Diana's input. She made the donors aware that the international community is also part of this problem and that they could help.

"We don't produce ammunition and mines in Angola."

The day before his visit to the place his mother had once walked, Harry spoke about his fondness for Africa, and how he'd found solace in Botswana soon after his mum's tragic death.

"Fifteen years I've been coming here, it's a sense of escapism, a real sense of purpose," he told Sky News reporters.

"I have some of my closest friends here and I came here in 1997 or 1998 straight after my mum died, so it was a nice place to get away from it all. But now I feel deeply connected to this place and to Africa."

Today, Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex had a full and impactful day in Botswana. As Sentebale co-founding patron, HRH visited Kasane Health Post, Botswana, to show his support for young people affected by #HIV and the important work being done to eradicate the stigma and support the community at large. He also spent the afternoon working with @elephantswithoutborders to continue to support conservation efforts on the ground- (for more on that please see our previous post!) Both organisations are close to The Duke's heart, having worked on conservation for many years and founding Sentebale over 13 years ago. As shared on the @sentebale account: In Kasane, 1 in 5 people aged between 15 and 49 live with HIV. The area, a transit point between four countries, is affected by a high HIV infection rate with transactional sex and unemployment driving risky behaviour. Sentebale expanded work in Botswana in 2016, over 47 clubs have been established around the country for young people coming to terms with living with #HIV, reaching over 1,250 adolescents monthly. In addition, the team has held 15 weeks of camp, attended by 1,115 campers. #RoyalVisitBostwana #SussexRoyalTour Photo©️PA

The Duke of Sussex began his first day in Botswana by helping a group of locals plant a 10-metre tall tree as part of an effort to create a new forest habitat on the banks of the Chobe River.

He also helped a group of schoolchildren to plant mahogany tree saplings as part of a project to turn land that was once privately owned but has now been pledged to the local community into a nature and cultural reserve.

The project is being spearheaded by Elephant Without Borders, a conservation group founded by Harry's close friend Dr Mike Chase, along with another local organisation.

Meanwhile, his wife Meghan Markle – who remained in South Africa with the pair's four-month-old son, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor – was impressing fans of her own.

Attending the 'Ladies Who Launch' event at the Woodstock Exchange, Meghan found herself confronted by crowds of well-wishers and fans who sang to her as she passed them by, waving and smiling.

As she walked passed their group, around 50 women sang to her: "African queen, there's a new tomorrow, African queen, a dream we can follow" – unofficially bestowing the title of Queen on the Duchess of Sussex.
