Prince Henrik, the father of Prince Frederik has died at age 87.
"His Royal Highness Prince Henrik died on Tuesday, February 13, at. 23.18 peacefully in his sleep at Fredensborg Palace", The Royal Danish House confirmed the heartbreaking news in a statement.
“The Prince was surrounded by Her Majesty The Queen and their two sons,” the statement continued.
In January, Prince Henrik was flown back to Denmark from a trip in Egypt after falling ill – after doctors found a benign tumour in his lung. The royal was treated at the Rigshospitalet initially and later transferred from the lung surgery department to the infectious department for more cautious treatment.
The late royal is survived by his wife of 50 years, Queen Margrethe; son and daughter-in-law, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary; son and daughter-in-law, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie; grandchildren, Prince Nikolai, Prince Felix, Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, Prince Henrik, Prince Vincent, Princess Josephine and Princess Athena, as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
