Eugenie, 27, showed off her dazzling pink sapphire engagement ring, and the couple spoke about their seven-year romance in the interview. Jack, 31, proposed during a trip to Nicaragua earlier this month — without a ring, he said, explaining that he “didn’t want to do anything until Eugenie had signed off on it.” Ahead of the proposal, however, he had selected a padparadscha sapphire stone. When they returned to the U.K., they designed the ring together.
Of the proposal, Eugenie told Baker, “the lake was so beautiful. The light was just a special light I had never seen. I actually said, ‘This is an incredible moment,’ and then he popped the question, which was really surprising even though we have been together seven years.
“I was over the moon. [It was a] complete surprise. But it was the perfect moment, we couldn’t be happier.” Added Jack, who got down on one knee for the proposal: “It was amazing. I love Eugenie so much, and we’re very happy.”
The princess, who met the former manager of London club Mahiki while skiing, added of her grandmother, Queen Elizabeth: “Granny actually knew right at the beginning [of the engagement]. She was very happy, as was my grandfather [Prince Philip].”
The couple first met seven years ago in Verbier, Switzerland. Eugenie said it was “love at first sight” — and Jack agreed.
“We met when I was 20, he was 24,” she said. “[We] fell in love. We have the same passions and drive for life.”
As for joining the U.K.’s most famous family, Jack said that it’s “very, very special to be a part of your family now,” but that the pair will continue on being “just Jack and Euge, I suppose.”
And Eugenie is also a fan of Jack’s family. “They’re really wonderful people,” she said. “Seven years, you get to know people pretty well. They’re already sort of parents and brother.”
The couple will wed in the fall, Buckingham Palace said in a statement Monday, and Eugenie says planning will start “as of tomorrow.”
Eugenie, who is the younger daughter of Sarah “Fergie” Ferguson, the Duchess of York and Prince Andrew, and Jack will walk down the aisle in the same venue — St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle — as her cousin Prince Harry, 33, and Meghan Markle, 36, on May 19, Buckingham Palace announced.
“The Duke and Duchess of York are delighted to announce the engagement of Princess Eugenie to Mr. Jack Brooksbank,” her parents said in a statement.
“The wedding will take place in the autumn of 2018 at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor, with further details to be announced in due course.”
