When it debuted in 2012, part of the humour in Veep’s depiction of US politics was because it seemed unthinkable characters that self-serving and idiotic could ever be in power.
Now, here we are as the much-lauded comedy enters its final season (watch the trailer above) and the idea of Selina Meyer (Louis-Dreyfus) being president would actually by an improvement on real life.
The campaigning by the former VP – and, briefly, POTUS – drives this season, which bombards viewers with inappropriate dialogue at such a rapid-fire rate that there is no time to take offence.
What other show could make jokes about school shootings (Selina's first question is how the latest tragedy will impact her campaign) and immigration ("too issue-y"), and get away with it?
Naturally, it's not going to be smooth sailing for Selina, with a couple of former thorns in her side also on the campaign trail. Meanwhile, Amy (Anna Chlumsky) and Dan (Reid Scott) deal with the fact that they are pregnant as only they can - not very well at all. (Starts Tue., Apr. 2 at 7.30pm; Fox Showcase) 5 stars
