'Santa Clarita Diet' is more insane than ever

The Netflix series about a suburban zombie ups the ante for its third season - by Gavin Scott
  • 01 Apr 2019

If The Walking Dead is at the serious end of the TV zombie series spectrum, then Netflix's Santa Clarita Diet is at the opposite extreme. It's absurd, it's over-the-top and it's hilarious. Watch the trailer for Season 3 below.

Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant play your average suburban couple with one big difference: Barrymore's character, Sheila, is a flesh-eating zombie, trying to keep her need for human meat under the radar, and only snacking on bad guys (or girls).

In Season 3, we pick up the morning after the events of the Season 2 finale, and although the Hammonds have staved off one set of issues that had them on the verge of making a run for it, new problems arrive on their doorstep … literally.

The Hammonds got Hollywood for our premier. We hope you lose yourself in the fun of the show! We work like Fred and Ginger not to miss a step and have fun while we do it! Dream partners and a respectful duo!

Barrymore and Olyphant continue to whole-heartedly embrace the ridiculous as their characters deal with Sheila’s affliction (or is that a gift from God?) with the show staying just the right side of preposterous.

Meanwhile, the Hammonds' daughter, Abby (Liv Hewson), and neighbour Eric (Skyler Gisondo) find themselves in a tricky situation of their own, resulting in them pretending to be a couple. Prepare for hearty chuckles. (On Netflix now) 4.5 stars

A pop culture enthusiast from a young age, Gavin is equally passionate about great pop music (’80s synthpop, ’10s dream pop), gripping TV series (Friday Night Lights, The Handmaid’s Tale) and trips to the cinema (I love a blockbuster as much as anyone, but I’m done with the superhero thing).
