It has been 10 years since she retired from professional swimming, and while Olympic gold medallist Giaan Rooney, 33, says she does not miss “the training, especially early mornings,” she is geared up to head back to the pool as a member of Seven’s swimming commentary team.
“I still get the same feelings leading into the Olympics as I did when I was an athlete,” Rooney tells WHO. “As an athlete you have to take a lot of the emotion out … you almost have to downplay the event. But now I’m feeding into it.”
Rooney, who will room with “the divine Joh Griggs” in Rio, will be flying solo in Brazil. And she admits that it won’t be easy being away from her family.
“This will be the longest I’ve been away from my 2-year-old son [Zander],” says Rooney. “I am away for just under three weeks, and that’s the toughest part for me.”
