ROAD trips are synonymous with an Aussie summer but the joy of being on the open road with the ones you love most can quickly turn to despair when you’re forced to endure the dulcet tones of incessant whining and hearing "Are we there yet?” and “I’m hungry!” on repeat.
While it’s important to ensure kids smell the roses, look out the window, chat to their siblings and play some games of the old classic I Spy, there are also some educational and interactive apps you can load onto your tablet before your trip to make the drive not only bearable but enjoyable, too!
Here are our picks.
Gismart’s Karaoke Face
This app is not ideal for a plane, for obvious reasons, but for a lengthy road trip, this Karaoke app is great fun for the whole family. Kids can take turns to select their favourite genre and songs and play around with audio effects. This app is available to download from Apple’s App Store.
A sucker for anything nature-related, this visually stunning app gives kids a taste of feeding wild animals, planting trees and growing forests and watching majestic sunsets. Better yet, little ones will hear real nature sounds so they can listen out for the real deal once you arrive at your destination.
Stories by Gus on the Go
While the kids are trapped in a confined space, they may as well learn a valuable skill at the same time. This free language-learning app, available to download from Apple’s App store, uses classic kids stories like Turtle and the Rabbit and The Three Little Pigs to help your little travellers learn Spanish, French, Greek or Hebrew.
Wheels on the Bus
This is an absolute must for the little folk in the family. A plethora of colourful activities, this playful one-stop activity centre helps pass the time with interactive sing-alongs, colouring in, memory games and happy bus maths that will help little ones develop their memory, logic and fine motor skills - and parents stay relaxed.
