Are Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis engaged?
Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis confirmed their engagement on Instagram on November 21, 2023.
Sharing a photo of her proposal, Sam revealed that she popped the question to Kristie on September 1, 2023 - shortly after the couple's World Cup appearance.
The confirmation comes over two months since eagle-eyed fans first spotted Kristie's engagement ring in early September, with the Team USA star's appearance in the EA FC 24 video game trailer showing the first glimpse of her engagement ring.
Following the initial rumours, Sam and Kristie appeared to go to great lengths to hide Kristie's ring in photos together, however, the disguise did not fool the vast majority of fans who were already convinced that the couple were engaged.
One week prior to the couple's announcement, Kristie let slip that she was engaged, telling People that her fiancée has "just been everything" to her.
"My biggest supporter, always listening to me nag and complain all, all of my crazy antics," she continued.
How did Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis meet?
The couple first met in 2019 while competing against each other during a US National Women’s Soccer League tournament match.
Speaking on their first on-field meeting, Kerr told Gaffer, "I thought her team was crazy. When I play I'm such a s*** stirrer and she was getting so angry... We always talked about this one time where she tried to get the ball. It was a free kick for her team. She put the ball down, and I kicked it away and was like 'Really?'."
Despite the slightly tense first meeting, Kerr and Mews' romance quickly began to blossom, with the two athletes forging their friendship - then relationship - over Instagram during the worldwide pandemic lockdowns.
"It was about three or four months until we could hang out in person. The first time we ever met there was quarantine, so we had to spend two weeks together the first time we met. I was thinking if I don't like her, this is going to be awkward," said Kerr.
When did Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis start dating?
As the couple began to hit it off online, fans were quick to speculate that the two world-class footballers were in a relationship.
Rumours surrounding their romance reached their peak following the bronze medal match between Australia and the United States, with the couple sharing a heartwarming moment on the pitch following Australia's narrow defeat.
Shortly after the match, both Kerr and Mewis confirmed their relationship, with Kerr sharing a polaroid of the couple kissing and Mewis sharing a selfie to Instagram.
Speaking on their decision to go public as a couple, Mewis told Gaffer, "I think it's endearing to share your life with other people, because I think if they can relate to you and you can maybe change their lives, I think it's important, especially with our platform, to share."
"We didn't share it for ages, then it just got too hard to hide it... We're not private people. I like sharing my story. I like sharing who I am outside of football. Football is 5% of my life," added Kerr.
When they're not playing for their respective national teams, Kerr and Mewis split their time between the US and the UK, with Mewis playing for New York's Gotham FC in the NWSL and Kerr for Chelsea FC in the FA Women's Super League.
"We always said it would be easier if we played in the same league because we would have the same winter break, we'd have the same summer break, but I think that when it is the opposite, she can come and see me after her season ends... so it does end up working out," said Mewis.
Speaking on their long-distance relationship, Kerr added, "I think the thing that keeps us going is that we can see an endpoint. We both just want each other to do well in our careers. I don't think you could be in a long-distance relationship with someone who didn't get the sport."
Both Sam and Kristie competed in Australia during the FIFA Women's World Cup.
Sadly for Kristie, her World Cup campaign ended prematurely, with Team USA being knocked out of the tournament in their round-of-16 match against Sweden.
"I’ve been putting this off because I’m not in the slightest bit ready for it to be real yet…. I’ll keep it short and sweet," she wrote to Instagram following the match.
"My teammates - you guys are incredible players but even better people. My family and friends - I am so lucky to have you I love you with all my heart. And to our fans - thank you for always believing in us."
Kerr and the Matildas subsequently came fourth in the World Cup, with Mewis also sharing a heartwarming tribute to Kerr and her World Cup campaign.
"It's also pretty cool getting to watch my best friend live her dream. Thank you babe for always being my everything every step of the way, and I'm so proud of you and thankful to you."
Mewis was also spotted at Australia's quarter-final match against France, with the couple being photographed sharing a kiss after the Matildas' victory.
