On Monday, Kensington Palace shared two photos of Princess Charlotte about to head off for her first day of school — snapped by her mum, Kate Middleton. In the pictures, the 2-year-old princess is smiling (and looks just like her great-grandma, Queen Elizabeth!) in a red and pink outfit and her brand-new backpack.
If it’s a moment that gives you a bit of déja vu, there’s a reason: Almost exactly two years ago, Charlotte’s big brother, Prince George, had his own first-ever day of school. And the family marked the occasion in the same way: Releasing two photographs, taken by Princess Kate.
The siblings’ photos are fairly similar, with a few notable differences. Charlotte, in her red wool coat and Mary Jane shoes, is a bit more formal for her first day than big brother George, who wore a blue puffer coat. Both wore backpacks in the photos: George’s a solid light-blue bag and Charlotte’s a patterned pink one from the British brand Cath Kidston.
The setting is different, too. That’s because Charlotte is attending Willcocks Nursery School, next door to London’s Royal Albert Hall. When George started preschool in early 2016, he attended the Westacre Montessori School near his family’s Norfolk home, Anmer Hall. Since then, the family has relocated full time to their London home, Kensington Palace, where Charlotte was photographed. You might recognize the backdrop — it’s where George and dad Prince William posed for a photo ahead of George’s first day at his new school, St. Thomas’s Battersea, last fall.
