1. A Better Chance Of *ahem* Romance
Let's get the most obvious of the health benefits out of the way first - sleeping naked is going to make sex with your partner, husband or wife way more likely. It's not rocket science, sleeping sans clothing means you're undressed and ready to go! But that's not all there is to it. Scientifically, couples sleeping naked enjoy the skin-to-skin contact which stimulates the release of oxytocin, 'The Love Hormone'. This can result in increased affection and attachment in your relationship - so everybody wins!
2. Sleep Easier
No one likes to suffer from bouts of insomnia, so consider sleeping in the buff if you find yourself tossing and turning most nights. Sleeping in the full monty, or at least sleeping a cooler room, sends messages to your brain that it's time to switch off. This is because your body temperature progressively declines as you sink deeper into sleep. If you swaddle yourself with pyjamas and doonas, you can become way too warm and consequently, your body won't know that it's time for sleep. You have to work with your body, not against it!
3. Let It Breathe
Here's a message going out to everyone that has a vagina - sleeping without underwear is much better for your fun zone. Sure, the sexy pants have their place in the bedroom, we'd be foolish to deny that! But sleeping with tight undies on can throw your lady garden into turmoil. Tight synthetic underwear can make your privates quite warm, and this warmth makes perfect breeding ground for loads of bacteria. We already have healthy bacteria that live down there, we don't need bad bacteria muscling them out! So after a long working day girls, sleeping naked is the way to go. Give your vag a break and let everything air out.
4. Better 'Swimmers'
Guys out there with dreams of fatherhood - pay close attention! While we're abstaining from coffee, champagne, soft cheese and pretty much everything else that bring us joy in preparation for a new little life, the least you can do is strip off! For men, sleeping naked can assist in increasing fertility. Men who wear tight fitting jocks can end up with a lower sperm count than those who spend more time 'free-ballin', and here's why. Once again, it all comes down to temperature. Testicles stay around 4-6 degrees cooler by hanging down below the body, and you want them 4-6 degrees cooler for optimum sperm production. Your swimmers can't handle the heat, so sleeping without underwear may be the way to go if you're in the mood to reproduce (see Reason 1!)
5. Stress Less
Sleep is just as essential as eating and drinking. The human body can last roughly a week without water. In a crisis, it can also last about 8 weeks without food, as long as there is water available. But it only takes 3 or 4 days without sleep for a human being to start hallucinating (most parents of a newborn will testify to this!) From the moment you open your eyes in the morning, your brain is all systems go! Dealing with problems at work, with emotions, with family and friends - it gets hit with everything but the kitchen sink every day of the year! We've established that sleeping nude allows for better quality of sleep, and the upshot of this is decreased stress and better mental health prospects. There's a reason why we tell people who have a difficult decision to make to sleep on it - everything becomes so much more manageable once you've had your 7-8 hours of shut eye.
6. Fight Signs of Ageing
We don't call it 'beauty sleep' for nothing! Sleeping topless (and bottomless!) can help you stay younger for longer. Being overly warm can stop scheduled melatonin and growth-hormone from being released - and trust us, you want these hormones in your life! They're in charge of blessing you with good strong hair and nails and blemish free skin - so don't be scared to bare all if you want to look your best!
7. Boost Your Metabolism
Ok, so sleeping nude isn't the same as going for a run or eating a salad, but it can certainly help speed up your metabolism a little bit! Keeping cool while you sleep allows you to receive your scheduled amount of growth hormones (see Reason 6), which also help with weight loss and muscle growth.
Famous Celebrity Nude Sleepers
We don't suggest you copy everything that celebrities do in their crazy day-to-day lives, but you should consider taking a page out of these icon's books.
1. Marilyn Monroe
Famously, all Marilyn wore to bed was Chanel No.5
2. Rosie Huntington-Whitely
The Victoria's Secret Angel has said on multiple occasions that she loves to sleep wearing the bare minimum - and that she isn't the only one who sleeps naked in her household!
3. Jason Statham
Rosie's partner of nearly a decade, actor Jason Statham, regularly sleeps in the buff as well and Rosie admitted in a Q&A that that's the way she likes it! Prime example of that age old saying: the couple who sleeps nude together, stays together (we may or may not have just made that up)
Are there any dangers associated with sleeping naked?
Never mind 'is sleeping naked better for you?' , is there any chance that it could be dangerous? As someone who has had to evacuate their apartment building due to a fire alarm, I can attest to the fact that it's important to keep a pair of pyjamas or a dressing gown close by in case of an emergency. Too many hotel staff have stories about hotel guests who lock themselves out of their rooms shirtless or worse, completely naked, and have to awkwardly waddle down to reception to get a key - so we wouldn't recommend sleeping naked when you're playing away from home either!
In our fast-paced, work driven world, it's becoming increasingly important that we prioritise quality sleep and good sleep health. The benefits of sleep are numerous, and sleeping naked only seems to help your overall wellbeing - so why not start tonight? Sweet dreams!
