Mayhew portrayed Chewbacca in George Lucas’s original Star Wars trilogy, as well as Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith. The actor later returned to the role for The Force Awakens.
“He fought his way back from being wheelchair-bound to stand tall and portray Chewbacca once more," his family said in the statement.
Following the announcement, friend and co-star Mark Hammill paid tribute to the late star.
"He was the gentlest of giants-A big man with an even bigger heart who never failed to make me smile & a loyal friend who I loved dearly-I'm grateful for the memories we shared & I'm a better man for just having known him," Hammil, who starred alongside Mayew in George Lucas’ saga-launching Star Wars in 1977.
Joonas Suotamo, who took over for Mayhew in a few instalments, also shared that he was deeply saddened by the news.
"Peter's guidance and kindness have been invaluable gifts which warmed my spirit and prepared me for this journey. I aspire to make Peter proud and bring Star Wars fans the Chewie they know and love."
Mayhew is survived by his wife, Angie, and their three children.
