While some fashion fanatics were surprised to see the reality star walk the red carpet for the first time in 2013, the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star has continued to deliver some of the Met Gala’s most memorable fashion moments.

2023 | Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty

Featuring over 50,000 pearls, Kim revealed that her custom Schiaparelli couture gown was designed to pay homage to one of Karl Lagerfeld’s signature Chanel design pieces.

“I thought, ‘What’s more Karl?’ The iconic Chanel pearls is always what I thought of, so we wanted to just be dripping in pearls,” she told Vogue.

2022 | In America: An Anthology of Fashion

From her identity shielding Balenciaga look to one of the most iconic dresses in American fashion, Kim made headlines at the 2022 Met Gala after it was revealed that she would be wearing Marilyn Monroe’s iconic ‘Happy Birthday Mr President’ gown. 

Topping the look with Marilyn’s signature peroxide blonde hair, Kim’s look was undeniably on theme, however, her decision to wear the fragile gown did not come without its fair share of criticism.

2021 | In America: A Lexicon of Fashion 

Although Kim’s all-black Balenciaga look was criticised by some, many critics felt that her de-personalised look was a nuanced take on the theme of American fashion.

“This look on Kim is like a new subculture and fashion statement. No logo, no face, but everyone knows it’s her,” a source told People.

2019 | Camp: Notes on Fashion

Stepping into the world of avant-garde couture, Kim’s sleek 2019 Thierry Mugler Met Gala ensemble quickly made headlines for its realistic wet look, with the designer describing his inspiration as “this California girl stepping out of the ocean.” 

Adding to the unique silhouette was Kim’s Mr Pearl corset, which she revealed took practice to wear.

“I’ve never had one like this. It is insane. I have never felt pain like that in my life,” she told The Wall Street Journal.

2018 | Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination

For lovers of over-the-top fashion, the 2018 Met Gala was home to some of the carpet’s most iconic looks to date, with the Catholic-inspired theme leading to heavily adorned gowns, capes, and headpieces. 

Offering a more modern take on the theme, Kim went for a body-con chainmail gown by Versace embroidered with reflective crucifixes.

Celebrating the work of designer Charles James, Kim wore a deep blue satin gown by Lavin. 

Keeping her old Hollywood-inspired look simple and classic, Kim accessorised the look with a pair of teardrop diamond earrings and her $4 million Lorraine Schwartz engagement ring.

2013 | Punk: Chaos to Couture

While it may now be over a decade since Kim’s first time at the Met Gala, her now infamous floral Givenchy dress is still one of her most talked-about red-carpet fashion moments.

Reflecting on her debut Met Gala look, Kim told Business Insider“I was crying the whole way home because I couldn’t believe it. There were all these memes about me [and my dress] and this couch.”
