To the Roy family, the "ludicrously capacious bag" immediately exposes Greg's date as someone not 'naturally' in their social circle. Despite the Burberry bag costing a whopping $3290 AU, it's flashy and - most tellingly - large.
"What's even in there?" Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) quips to Greg. "Flat shoes for the subway? Her lunch pail? Greg, it's monstrous. It's gargantuan. You could take it camping."
Apparently, to those who have assistants to carry their things, sporting a large bag is a big no-no.
Now, who is the (fictional) Roy family to tell people what bags they should carry?
Perhaps you enjoy the traditional Burberry tartan.
Perhaps you recognise classist dress codes and want to reclaim those items looked down-upon by the uber-rich.
Perhaps you like subverting traditional status symbols and won't be told by a Tom-style fool that your bag is uncool.
Perhaps you, like most of us working folks, simply do need a bag to carry your flats for the post-work commute!
