The band confirmed the news in a statement on Facebook, "It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Mark E. Smith," he wrote. “He passed this morning at home. A more detailed statement will follow in the next few days. In the meantime, Pam & Mark’s family request privacy at this sad time.”
A cause of death has not been revealed.

Post-punk band The Fall were formed in 1976, and have had 66 members throughout the years. Smith was the only constant one, and the remaining founding member.
Despite releasing 32 albms, The Fall is best remembered for their cover of the Kinks’s “Victoria".
