While Melbourne-based designer Court can't change how she introduced her project manager husband Matt to viewers on My Kitchen Rules, she tries to explain why she said he was "a d*******g" in the years before they married.
"When I started my business, I kind of needed some extra income," Court begins, "so I worked a couple nights at a bar that Dunc was managing. So he was my boss for a couple of years, and we didn’t really hit it off."
It took four years, in fact, and a shift in roles, to change their relationship when the bar they worked at closed down and a small staff got moved to another location. "Out of that, I was less responsible for making her do things she didn't want to do," Duncan says, "so she could sort of see me as a human being rather than as an ogre asking her to clean up at the end of the night."
At first, Duncan came off as "a footy boy, very blokey," Court says, "while I'm quite sensitive." But one day, after chatting at work, Court adds, "I was like, 'Ooh, Duncan's fine!'"
Duncan laughs and says, "I think it must have been because someone was being a d******d that day and she was like, 'You know, Duncan's not that bad!'"
Another year passed before the laidback pair truly clicked as a couple and within six months, Duncan proposed at the Meredith Music Festival. "We were just sitting on a hill drinking whisky," Court recalls, "when he said, 'Do you want to be my wife already?' And I was like, 'Sure.' And then the next morning, I was like, 'Was that actually a thing?' He was like, 'Yeah!' I said, 'Should we call some people?' He said, 'Yeah, whatever you want.'"
In June 2015, Court and Duncan wed on the grounds of the converted butter factory in Euroa, Victoria, 160 kilometres north of Melbourne. "I just like that it was quiet and cosy," Duncan says. "I don't think we could have done better, to be honest."
And now the couple find themselves on MKR having completed their Instant Restaurant. "We had fun," Court says. "It was really challenging, but Dunc and I came away from it stronger."
My Kitchen Rules airs tonight at 7.30 PM on Channel 7.
