Three cheers! It feels like forever since Season 4 wrapped up with fortysomething Liza (Foster) still pretending to be twentysomething to hold down her job in publishing and still wobbling between her younger paramour, the newly married Josh (Nico Tortorella)—who just happened to declare he still had feelings for her the night before he got hitched—and the more suitably aged if equally unavailable Charles (Peter Hermann)—who is still entangled with the mother of his children. For all the slapstick and banter that makes Younger so fun, it's the heart-tugging angst that keeps you wanting more. 4 stars (Season 5, Episode 1 now on Stan)—By Deborah Grunfeld
2. Schitt’s Creek
STARRING: Eugene and Daniel Levy
Co-creator Daniel Levy made the genius move of hiring his dad, comedy legend Eugene, and his frequent film offsider Catherine O’Hara (Best in Show, Waiting for Guffman) for this single-cam Canadian masterpiece about a wealthy family who lose everything they own thanks to a shady business manager. The only asset they have left is a tiny, backwater town called Schitt’s Creek (bought as a ‘dad joke’ for his son’s birthday) where they must relocate and start over. Hilarious and heartfelt, it’s the most fun family dynamic. 4 stars (Season 4 now on Netflix) —By Jennie Noonan
3. THE STAIRCASE
STARRING: Michael Peterson
Whether you are already a fan of this superb true-crime story about North Carolina’s Peterson, accused of murdering his wife in 2001, or whether you have never seen the show before, there is fresh reason to catch the series. The story, with all its twists and turns, would be unbelievable if it were a crime procedural. But the filmmakers have pulled together an incredibly compelling tale with unprecedented access to both the defence and the prosecution. And now there are three fresh episodes with the latest developments in the ongoing saga. 4 stars (Now on Netflix)—By Deborah Grunfeld
4. COBRA KAI
STARRING: Ralph Macchio, William Zabka
Forget the film sequels that followed Daniel-san’s crane-kick triumph over golden boy Johnny in 1984’s The Karate Kid—this is the where-are-they-now we never knew we wanted but apparently do. As an adult, Daniel LaRusso (Macchio) has gained a wife, two kids and much wealth as a hot-shot LA car dealer, while Johnny Lawrence (Zabka) is a beer-swigging contractor down on his luck and estranged from his ex-wife and son. However, a karate-inducing incident causes Johnny to revive the Cobra Kai dojo (“Strike first, strike hard, no mercy”) to help bullied kids and Daniel to revive their rivalry. Created by Harold & Kumar writers Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg and Hot Tub Time Machine’s Josh Heald, this 10-part series has movie flashbacks, humour, heart and classic ’80s tunes. 3 stars (Now on YouTube Red) —By Cynthia Wang
5. Midsomer Murderthon
STARRING: John Nettles, Neil Dudgeon
What better way to spend the Queen's birthday weekend then indulging in a host of whodunnits, Midsomer style. UKTV has curated a random assortment of the kookiest episodes—death by cheese wheel!—featuring both DCIs Tom Barnaby (Nettles) and his cousin John (Dudgeon—who also appears as a randy gardener in Season 4 Episode 1's "Garden of Death") and their assorted sidekicks. Catching the killer is not nearly as important as enjoying Tom trying to get out his wife's bad cooking and John putting up with pup Sykes's bad behaviour. Then there's those classic village names, Badger's Drift, Aspern Tallow, Midsomer everything ... 3 stars (Airs Saturday and Sunday, midday till 11.45pm, and Monday, 12.30pm till 6.20pm, on Foxtel Now) —Deborah Grunfeld
