Taking in much larger venues than his March 2018 Australian visit, Peterson has risen dramatically in prominence over the past year and will be accompanied by YouTube personality and comedian Dave Rubin.
While the professor’s occasional run-ins with opponents have sparked controversy, he has amassed a huge following for his self-help advice – which focusses on personal responsibility and a quest for higher meaning as a solution to the challenges of life. He also argues against what he calls ‘ideological possession’ – something he says is a particular problem on modern university campuses.
Peterson initially rose to international prominence by opposing Canadian legislation that mandated the use of transgender pronouns; something he saw as an unacceptable imposition on free speech. However, he has stated that he would use transgender pronouns if personally requested, and rejects claims his position is anti-trans.
A string of sometimes tense encounters with TV interviewers since have become viral sensations, most recently a heated exchange with feminist Helen Lewis, on behalf of British GQ. His book, 12 Rules For Life, has been a best seller in Australia.
