10 Best Sunscreens: Most Effective Sunscreen In Australia

Australia can get a little crazy with the weather. One day you might get two month’s worth of rain in one afternoon, and other days can get so hot you can cook an egg on your head. If you’re experiencing a case of the latter, getting some sunscreen can be a lot of help. But what are the best sunscreens in Australia?

There are plenty of brands out there that can do in a pinch. For example, the generic Aldi sunscreen or Coles sunscreen you find at your local market are all good choices price-wise, while Le-Tan, Hamilton, All Good, and Aesop come in different formulations for different needs. But if you want the best of the best (like the stuff approved by the Environmental Working Group or EWG), here is a list that can help.

Top Australian Sunscreen Brands For Men And Women

Banana Boat SPF 50+ Dry Balance Clear Aerosol Spray 175g, $8.99, Chemist Warehouse.

banana

Banana Boat is one of the brands that offer a little bit of everything when it comes to sun protection and aftercare. Their formulations are approved by the Skin Cancer Foundation and come in sprays for easier, non-stick application.

What we like: It can absorb excess moisture, which gives it a nice matte finish on your skin.

Badger Sport Sunscreen SPF 35, $23.57, iHerb.

badger

For those who spend their days in the sun because of sports or other physical activities, the Badger Sport sunscreen is a must-buy. Not only is it made from all natural ingredients that don't harm the environment (so you can use it for reef swimming!), it's also gentle on your skin.

What we like: The 22.5 percent zinc oxide gives you up to 80 minutes of intense activity or swimming – it’s waterproof until it gets fully absorbed, so you don’t have to worry about it being washed off!

Natio SPF 50+ Face Moisturiser, $16.99, Chemist Warehouse.

natio

Vegans will love this animal-free sunscreen from Natio. The SPF50+ rating makes it so that you can get up to four hours of fun in the sun before you need to reapply it again, and the additional ingredients like Aloe Vera extract help repair your skin from the other effects of sun exposure.

What we like: it's locally made and certified to only use all-natural ingredients – perfect for the product-conscious sun lover.

MDSolarSciences Broad Spectrum Mineral Creme SPF50, from $25.50, Dermstore.

md

It’s not as cheap as the other ones on this list, but the MDSolarSciences formula makes sure you get what you pay for. It's easy to apply and all the ingredients have been medically tested to be effective at blocking UVA exposure while still being thin enough for oily skin to easily absorb.

What we like: It's small and portable, so you can bring it anywhere! It’s a good alternative to most store-bought sunblocks, like Ombra's sunscreen.

Alba Botanica Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30, $16.40, iHerb.

alba

This sunscreen has the perfect mixture of ingredients that both block out the sun and lock moisture in your body – a good combination! Skin issues like flaking and drying out will never be an issue with this, making this perfect for a lazy afternoon on the beach. It's also not animal-tested, so you can slather it on without any guilt.

What we like: Even skin coverage combined with moisturiser to keep you fresh on a hot day? Sign us up!

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sunscreen SPF 100+, $18.52, iHerb.

neutrogena

This sunscreen has an SPF of 100+, one of the strongest on the market, making it perfect for days in the hot Australian sun. The dry touch technology allows for a non-greasy matte finish so you can stay sun safe without that sunscreen feeling.

What we like: The lightweight clean feeeling.

EGO SunSense Daily Face Invisible Tint SPF 50, $23.49, Chemist Warehouse.

sunsense

The face can be one of the tricker areas when it comes to sunscreen since it needs the correct balance of both moisture and oil to prevent it from drying out. EGO's SunSense formulation allows you to get maximum protection without sacrificing that balance. Plus, it’s specially made for dry skin.

What we like: It's light and easy to apply, non-greasy to the touch and virtually unnoticeable once you put it on.

Aveda Sun Care Protective Hair Veil, $50, Adore Beauty.

aveda

We've talked a lot about the importance of keeping your skin safe from the sun, but something else that you may not have thought of is your hair. Aveda uses a gentle yet powerful formulation that provides all the UV protection your hair needs on a hot day. Simply spray it on and reapply when necessary – it's that easy.

What we like: It's made of all natural products, making it one of the best natural sunscreen formulas you can buy.

Cancer Council Australia Ultra Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50, $10.47, Chemist Warehouse.

cancer council

This brand creates some of the best sunscreens in Australia, with high-quality ingredients that stay on longer, cutting down how often it needs reapplication. This particular bottle tops many lists of the best sunblocks you can get right now, with glowing reviews from users all around the country.

What we like: None of the weird sunblock scent when you’re applying it, which is great for everyday use.

(Don’t) Feel The Burn

So the next time you feel like going out on a sunny day, drop by the drugstore and get yourself one of these products (and maybe some tinted glasses while you’re at it). There’s no reason to stop having fun in the sun because of some UV rays – put on some lotion and spray on some cream, and you’ll be more than ready to go. Have fun!
