An endoscopy involves using an endoscope - a long, thin medical instrument with a light and lens used for viewing the body internally - to examine inside a patient's body.
Two common forms of endoscopy are an upper endoscopy, also known as an esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), which looks at the esophagus, stomach andfirst part of the small intestine for patients who experience regular heartburn, vomiting or other symptoms.
Another type is endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, or ERCP, in which the endoscopy is inserted in the patient's mouth and worked down to the small intestine to treat issues with bile and pancreatic ducts.
This procedure can cause pancreatitis due to manipulating the pancreatic duct opening with the scope, however Travis did not clarify which type of endoscopy he underwent nor the specific details of his complications.
