"Whenever I meet new people, the first thing I do is find something in common with them. This remote Himba tribe was easy once I lifted up my shirt."
The bushfire survivor is due to give birth to her first child in December, revealing to60 Minutes that she discovered she was expecting a few days before she was due to fly to Mt Everest.
She told Hoskin while he was brushing his teeth. "I just walked in and I left the pregnancy stick there," she said.
Turia also told the TV programme that she is confident her longtime partner Michael will make a brilliant father.
"He had to look after me for years, and he was so patient, so caring. I think those qualities, especially in a parent, are really desirable."
